Why WhatsApp beats email for festival campaigns
Festival-season inboxes are war zones. Every retailer, D2C brand, and service business is shouting at the same customer on the same day. Email open rates during Diwali week drop to 8-12% for even top-tier senders. WhatsApp, where the customer opted in specifically to hear from you, holds 45-70% open rates in the same window.
- 98% delivery rate — WhatsApp doesn't have a promotions folder.
- 60-second read latency — festival buyers check their phone within 60 seconds of the notification.
- One-tap CTA conversion — from message to product page to checkout in 3 taps.
- Regional language native — festival buyers in India respond 40% better to Hindi / Tamil / Kannada templates than English.

Timing calendar — when to send each template
The template alone doesn't win. When you send it matters more.
- D-14 (Announcement): Sunday 6 PM. Highest open rate of the pre-festival window.
- D-7 (Preview): Saturday 11 AM. Weekend browse window.
- D-3 (Countdown): Sunday 8 PM. Reminders before Monday shopping.
- D-day (Launch): 10 AM sharp — before the aggregator ads flood in.
- D+1 (Flash): 2 PM. Post-lunch peak buying window.
- Post-purchase: within 5 minutes of order confirmation.
Opt-in rules — how to build the list before the festival
You cannot broadcast to non-opt-in contacts on the Business API. Meta will yellow-rate you within 500 messages, then red-rate within 2,000. Before Diwali, spend 3-4 weeks building your opt-in list:
- Add a "WhatsApp me my order updates + offers" checkbox to your checkout page.
- Run a Meta Ad campaign with "Send WhatsApp" objective — Meta prompts the user to opt in before the chat opens.
- Print a QR code on package inserts: "Scan for exclusive festive offers on WhatsApp."
- Import your CRM opt-in list from previous years, and re-confirm consent with a Utility message.
Quality-rating protection — sending 10,000+ festival broadcasts
Meta rates your number green / yellow / red based on block-rate and report-rate. A single bad broadcast can drop a green number to yellow — which caps you at 1,000 messages per 24 hours and torpedoes the entire festival window.
- Warm up 4 weeks ahead. If your baseline is 500 messages/day, gradually scale to 5,000/day before Diwali week — not on Day 1.
- Segment aggressively. Send the loyalty-VIP template to the top 100 first. If block-rate stays <1%, cascade to the next 1,000.
- Include one-tap STOP. Every template ends with "Reply STOP to unsubscribe." Block-rate drops measurably.
- Personalise the first 40 characters. Meta's spam classifier weights the message opening heavily. Generic "Dear customer" spikes block-rate; personalised "Anuj — your Diwali picks" doesn't.
